O'Grady lived in the city of Wheaton, Illinois she graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a Financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in 1981. She appeared on a few commercials for television before moving from Illinois to Los Angeles. The career path O'Grady started her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was then cast as a frequent character in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she has guest-starred as a guest on independent films and television shows. Donna Abandando played her first leading role on ABC's NYPD Blue the police drama. O'Grady's role as the tall, blonde team secretary in the series from 1993 until 1996. In each of those years she won one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in Drama Series.
