O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. Judges loved her voice and she made it to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised by the jury. However, she was a major loser in the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were shocked by the results and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa O'Neil, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following an impressive string of performance. The judge Werner predicted, after two other breathtaking performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner in this year's Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest in show history after the 7th September, 2005 finals. O'Neil received a call shortly after her win from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
